Accessibility
Blackbird Foods wants everyone to be able to browse, read, and order from this site, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or voice control.
What we aim for
We work toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These are the standards most widely used to judge whether a website is usable by people with disabilities.
Where we actually stand
We are being straight with you rather than claiming a clean bill of health. This site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. That means most of the site meets the standard, and we know of some areas that do not yet.
Things we have built in on purpose:
- A skip-to-content link, and proper page landmarks, so keyboard and screen reader users are not forced through the menu on every page
- Visible focus outlines on every interactive element
- Descriptive alternative text on product and recipe images
- Labelled form fields on the contact and newsletter forms
- Pause controls on the announcement bar and the background video, so nothing moves without your say-so
- Respect for your device's reduced motion setting
- Ingredients listed as real text, not only as a photo of the package
Known limitations
We would rather name these than let you discover them:
- Nutrition panels. Some product pages still show nutrition information only as a photograph of the printed label. We are converting these to real text. If you need values for a product that has not been converted yet, email us and we will send them the same day.
- Third-party tools. Our customer reviews and our store locator are provided by outside companies and embedded into our pages. We do not control their code, and their accessibility is not something we can fix directly. If one of them blocks you, tell us and we will help you get what you need another way, and we will raise it with the vendor.
- Checkout. Checkout is operated by Shopify. Shopify publishes its own accessibility conformance report and is actively remediating known issues.
Tell us if something does not work
If any part of this site gets in your way, we want to hear about it, and we will help you complete your order in the meantime.
Email info@blackbirdfoods.com with the page you were on and what happened. We aim to reply within 3 business days. If you are trying to place an order, say so and we will handle it with you directly.
We also welcome the harder feedback: if something technically meets the standard but is still miserable to use, that is worth telling us too.
Ongoing work
Accessibility is not a box we tick once. We test with keyboard navigation and automated tooling as we build, we fix what those turn up, and we re-check when we add features.
